It's real now. On a clear Thursday morning at 6,100 feet, with the Pacific Ocean visible on the western horizon and a Cooper's hawk circling overhead like it was auditioning for the role of brand mascot, Mirage Mountain Resort officially broke ground on Palomar Mountain in San Diego County.
There were shovels. There were hard hats. There was a brief moment where the ceremonial shovel got stuck in a root and our CEO had to pretend that was intentional. It was perfect.
The Ceremony
Approximately 150 guests gathered at the future base area of Mirage Mountain Resort for the groundbreaking ceremony, including county officials, community members, project partners, and a handful of locals from the Palomar Mountain community who have been watching this project develop with a mixture of excitement and "we'll believe it when we see it" energy. Fair enough.
"Eighteen months ago, this was a pitch deck and a dream. Today, it's a construction site. I'd say something profound about believing in the impossible, but mostly I'm just relieved we got the permits." -- Jake Caldwell, Founder & CEO, Mirage Mountain Resort
Representatives from Tias Capital, the project's primary funding partner, were on hand for the ceremony. "We invest in projects that create something genuinely new," said Tias Capital Managing Partner Elena Vasquez. "A ski resort in San Diego County qualifies. We're proud to be part of bringing this mountain to life."
Construction Timeline
Phase 1 construction will proceed through the next 18 months, with major milestones including:
- Summer 2025: Site preparation, road improvements, and utility infrastructure
- Fall 2025: Chairlift installation begins, starting with the Stardust Express main lift
- Winter 2025/26: The Warming Hut lodge construction and snowmaking infrastructure
- Spring/Summer 2026: Trail clearing, grading, and finishing work
- Fall 2026: Final systems testing, snowmaking commissioning, and staff hiring
- December 2026: Opening day
What's Being Built
Phase 1 includes 4 chairlifts accessing 22 runs across 280 skiable acres, The Warming Hut base lodge (12,000 square feet of timber, stone, and the most dramatic fireplace in San Diego County), a snowmaking system covering 60% of terrain, a full rental shop and ski school, and 200-space parking with shuttle service from Escondido.
The total Phase 1 investment is $38 million, which sounds like a lot until you consider that we're literally building a ski resort from scratch on a mountain in Southern California. The budget includes a line item we've internally labeled "things we didn't expect," which is either smart planning or tempting fate.

Construction updates will be posted regularly on this site and our social channels. We'll share progress photos, construction milestones, and the occasional behind-the-scenes moment that reminds you this project is being built by real humans who occasionally argue about where to put the hot chocolate station.
