We've been calling it The Warming Hut since day one, which is a little misleading because there's nothing "hut" about it. Today, Mirage Mountain Resort is unveiling the architectural design for our base lodge on Palomar Mountain, and we need to talk about this fireplace.
The Building
The Warming Hut is a 12,000-square-foot timber-frame and natural stone lodge sitting at the base of the Stardust Express chairlift. Designed by Tahoe-based firm Ridge & Timber Architects, the lodge draws inspiration from classic national park architecture while incorporating modern sustainable building practices. It's the kind of building that makes you want to use words like "rustic elegance," and we're not above that.
The structure features:
- Exposed timber framing using reclaimed Douglas fir beams -- because new wood is for people who don't care about character
- Local granite stone sourced from San Diego County quarries for the exterior walls and that fireplace
- A 14-foot stone fireplace visible from the main entrance, the dining area, the bar, and arguably from low Earth orbit
- Floor-to-ceiling windows on the north face, providing unobstructed views of the ski slopes and the forest canopy beyond
- A wraparound deck with heated seating for aprés-ski -- because standing outside in the cold is only fun when you choose to do it
Inside the Lodge
The interior layout includes:
- Full-service restaurant (250 seats) with a menu focused on elevated comfort food -- think house-made chili, local craft beer, and the kind of grilled cheese that makes you rethink everything you thought you knew about grilled cheese
- Bar and lounge with craft cocktails, local wines, and a hot chocolate program that we're taking extremely seriously
- Full rental shop with current-season equipment and a team that won't judge you for not knowing which foot is your dominant one
- Ski school headquarters with dedicated check-in, indoor meeting area, and easy slope access
- Retail space carrying Mirage Mountain branded gear, because you'll want proof you were here
The Fireplace
Let's talk about the fireplace. It's 14 feet tall. It's built from granite that was pulled out of the mountain itself. It has a hearth wide enough to seat twelve people around it, and it burns real wood because sometimes the old ways are the best ways.
We designed the entire building around this fireplace. Not architecturally -- that would be structurally questionable. But emotionally? Yes. The fireplace is the heart of The Warming Hut, and The Warming Hut is the heart of Mirage Mountain Resort in San Diego County. When you walk in from a day on the slopes, cold and tired and grinning, the first thing you'll see is the fire. And the second thing you'll see is someone handing you a drink.
Sustainability
The Warming Hut is designed to LEED Silver standards, featuring solar-assisted heating, high-efficiency insulation, and the dark-sky-compliant lighting required by our agreement with Palomar Observatory. The building's water systems connect to our closed-loop snowmaking recycling infrastructure.
Construction on The Warming Hut begins this winter, with completion targeted for fall 2026. See the full resort layout on our Mountain page, and secure your spot at this fireplace with an Eternal Snow Founding Member Pass.
